By Greg Perkins and Sam Conner The Holbrook Roadrunner wrestlers took first place at their own Pat Kenny Invitational tournament held Dec. 5 and 6. The Birds finished at the top of the 14-team field with three individual champions and two runners-up. In the final team standings the Roadrunners (H) scored 196.5 points to outdistance second place Win-slow (W), which had 169.5. Mountain Ridge (MR) was third with 161.5, followed by St. Pius (SP) with 142, Monument Valley (MV), 129, Tolleson (T), 98, Greyhills (Gr), 62, Tuba City (TC), 50, Trevor Browne (TB), 42.5, Chinle (C), 37, Canyon State Academy (CSA), 31, Ganado (Ga), 31, Valley Sanders (VS), 11, and Piñon (P), 7. Holbrook’s Markos Serna won the title in the 140-pound class with a win over Aaron Baca of Winslow. Gabi Aguilera defeated Anthony Guzman from Winslow for the 119-pound title and Tyrell Sulu claimed the heavyweight championship with a win over Joshua Hoshnic from Monument Valley in the title match. Vidal Maestas went 4-3 at the tourney; Rueben Serna, 4-2; Gabi Aguilera, 8-0; RJ Alvarado, 6-3; Duffy Duecheneu, 4-4; Markos Serna, 8-0; David Hatch, 5-3; James Lerma, 5-1; AJ Aragon, 5-3; Luke Bowman, 6-1; Adrian Perkins, 6-3; Tyrell Sulu, 7-0; and Sam Glasses, 1-3. “Going into the Pat Kenny I knew we had a great team this year. The guys wrestled hard and won when we needed it most. There are still many things we need to work on. We have a solid veteran team this year and some talented young wrestlers. I am excited to see just how good they can be,” said Holbrook Coach John Bokker. The Winslow Bulldogs enjoyed a fine performance in their first tournament under new head coach Lawrence Watson. They had one individual champion and six second place finishers. Eddie Montano won the 135-pound division championship over Alexis Santana of St. Pius to give Win-slow its only individual championship. Anthony Guzman, Johnny Montoya, Pat Young, Aaron Baca, Wyatt DeWitt and Keifer Gilbert all fin-ished second in their weight divisions. Mike Rohde from Saint Pius was named Most Outstanding Light Weight Wrestler. Markos Serna of Holbrook was named the Most Outstanding Middle Weight Wrestler. Ty Sells from Monument Valley was named the Most Outstanding Heavyweight Wrestler. The Roadrunners will be in action this weekend in a big tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. The Winslow wrestling team will meet Round Valley at Eagar in a dual meet tonight (Dec. 10) and host a multi-team event with Chinle, Hopi and Greyhills on Saturday, Dec. 13.
