Lindsey White Cheers On D-Backs As One Of Their New Rally-BacksJuly 30th, 2008
By Linda Kor Lindsey White is a small town girl who’s making the most out of life in the big city. The daughter of Michaela Young and stepdaughter of Holbrook Fire Chief Merrell Young, White is a 2005 Holbrook High School graduate in her fourth year at Arizona State University studying to become a nurse. On top of her busy school schedule, White was recently selected to become a Rally-back for the Arizona Diamondbacks baseball team. According to White, being a Rally-back is a fantastic experience. “We do a lot of charity events and get to work with kids a lot,” stated White. “We have full access to the ball field, lead the chants during the game and start the cheers. It’s just been awesome.” When White applied for the position, there were 200 to 300 other applicants wanting to be a Rally-back as well. After submitting an application, resume and cover letter, she was selected as one of 60 applicants asked to come back for the interview process. “The interview process wasn’t a one-on-one interview. You were in a group of 15 people and labeled with a number. You really had to work hard to stand out,” she explained. The process consisted of a series of questions as to why they wanted the job. Then each applicant was asked to come up with a quick chant on the spot. Next came the on-camera interview to see how well the applicants presented themselves and looked on camera, and then the final process was to see how witty they could be in an awkward situation. “They asked really bizarre questions and you had only three seconds to respond--questions like what’s your favorite Subway sandwich, or tell us about your favorite Disney character,” related White. “I really didn’t think I had a chance at being selected, but about two weeks later I got the call that I was one of 18 applicants chosen,” stated White. The first event White participated in was the Evening on the Diamond. The annual fund-raising event is hosted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, and included an elegant cocktail party and dinner on the Chase Field diamond attended by many of the Valley’s elite philanthropists and corporate representatives. Every member of the 2008 Diamondbacks coaching staff and team attended the event. “It was a very cool experience, and I met all of the players and their families. There are a lot of terrific experiences doing this,” added White. White, who was a cheerleader and cheer captain in high school, is anticipating trying out for the pro-gram again next year.
