Fair Board Elections Planned For Jan. 13December 16th, 2009
By Linda Kor The Navajo County Fair Board will be holding their annual meeting to elect board members at the Navajo County Fair Grounds at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 13. There will be five seats up for election, with three year terms for each. Board members whose terms are up include Mike Sample, Redgie Justman, Kelly Favro, Laurie Reynolds and Alberto Peshlakai. Individuals interested in serving on the board are asked to attend the meeting and speak on their own behalf. In another matter, during the board’s Dec. 9 meeting, board member Jimmy Crosby discussed the possibility of offering a week-long camp in order to teach 4-H kids how to handle their animals. “Each year 50 to 60 students (from across the country) go to Oklahoma to a special clinic to learn how to handle their animals. If we could find a major feed company to sponsor the training I think we should have one here. We could charge $250 plus the hotel and put on clinics throughout the week,” explained Crosby. Holding the event at the fairgrounds would not only bring revenue into the city but would allow families traveling from the western part of the country to save travel expenses. It was suggested that holding the clinics the third week of June and then holding a SAILA (Southern Arizona International Livestock Association) show on the following weekend of June 18 would produce a large crowd. It was even suggested that if the city was willing to hold its annual Old West Days celebration that same weekend, the event would draw even more people and it would also benefit the city. The board approved the dates of June 18 and 19 for the SAILA show and it was determined that Crosby would present further information regarding clinics for the week prior to that event. In other business, the board: * Approved a facilities use request by National Barrel Horse Association for February 13. * Approved expenditures in the amount of $11,16769.
