Winslow Harvey Girls To Present Their Trunk Show On Saturday

July 24th, 2008

The Winslow Harvey Girls are scheduled to present their Trunk Show on Saturday, July 26, at Snow-drift Art Space in historic downtown Winslow in conjunction with the Smithsonian “Fences” program. The exquisite display of railroad memorabilia and Fred Harvey China will be on display for the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with volunteers dressed in their signature 1890s black and white floor length Harvey uniforms.
The trunk show collection started a dozen years ago with three types of china carried in a doll trunk and displayed on a linen covered card table. Today it travels in three footlockers and requires two banquet-sized tables to accommodate the display.
The partnership between the Santa Fe Railroad and Fred Harvey began with a handshake in the mid-1870s. Fred Harvey brought fine food and fine dining to the Western frontiers which ultimately stretched from Chicago to the West Coast. A major addition to the fine service was the hiring of Harvey Girls, well-trained young women between the ages of 18 and 30, intelligent and of good character, who served the public at Harvey Houses across the railroad. These young women are credited with helping civilize the West.
The Winslow Harvey Girls serve as volunteer meeters and greeters and ambassadors of goodwill for Winslow, and are dedicated to preserving the history of the Santa Fe Railroad, Fred Harvey, Mary Colter, the Harvey Girls and Winslow’s La Posada--the last of the great railroad hotels built in 1930.
The Trunk Show collection provides the opportunity to view a wide cross section of Fred Harvey China and railroad memorabilia used across the country.
