College Board Awards Contract For NATC Paving Improvements

July 18th, 2008

By Tammy Gray-Searles
A $273,510 contract was awarded for paving improvements at the Northeastern Arizona Training Center (NATC) in Taylor during a meeting of the Navajo County Community College District Governing Board Tuesday.
The board held a special teleconference meeting to consider the issue so that work could begin as soon as possible.
Surface Contracting of Glendale was awarded the contract, which includes a main project and two alternative additions. The main project is the installation of a draft pit. A written summary provided to the board members noted that, “The completion of this project will allow fire training to occur in and around the tower.”
Two alternative additions to the project also received approval from the board. Together, they will complete the paving, installation of a sidewalk, curb and striping for a parking lot next to the classroom building on the NATC site.
The engineer’s estimate for the entire project, including both alternates, was $300,948, with $187,353 of that amount for installation of the draft pit, and $113,595 for work on the parking lot. Surface Contract-ing bid the project for less than the engineer’s estimate. The firm will contract with the college to complete the draft pit for $152,850 and the parking lot for $120,660, for a total of $273,510.
Hatch Construction and Paving of Taylor was the only other bidder. Hatch bid a total of $227,788 for installation of the draft pit and $158,852 for work on the parking lot, for a total of $386,640.
Work on the draft pit and parking lot will bring total expenditures of the $1 million allocated by the state for the NATC project to $889,629. The summary document notes, “Additional components of preparing the tower and classroom for use are expected to exhaust the balance of the fiscal year 2007-08 allocation.”
More funding from the state has been approved for fiscal year 2008-09. A total of $500,000 is expected in the upcoming year. It will be put toward a second phase of construction, which will include construction of a bay to hold fire training apparatus, security lighting, and the purchase of training props and equipment.
The governing board has assumed responsibility for administering the funding.
A regular meeting of the board is not scheduled again until 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12. The regular meeting for July was canceled.
