County To Contribute Up To $1 Million To Scott Ranch Road Expansion ProjectJuly 18th, 2008
By Linda Kor With the recent completion of the transportation study in the southern portion of the county, it was recommended that Scott Ranch Road in Show Low be extended from State Route 260 (White Mountain Blvd.) to Penrod Road. The cost estimate for this project, which is considered a critical route in the regional transportation plan, is approximately $5.5 million. A federal aid grant of approximately $2.25 million has been acquired by the City of Show Low to pay for a portion of the cost. Since this route is considered beneficial for all travelers in Navajo County, the city has asked that Navajo County share in the remaining cost of $2.25 million re-quired to complete the project. Navajo County Engineer James Matteson went before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday to request that the chairman of the board sign an intergovernmental agreement with the City of Show Low to share in the cost of the Scott Ranch Road design and construction project. The agreement presented states that the county would provide $200,000 in 2008-09 to help pay for the design concept report and environmental studies, and 30 percent plans. If the project proceeds to construction, four additional yearly installments of $200,000 would be provided to help with the cost of the project. The grand total of the county’s participation would be $1 million provided over five years. The City of Show Low would pay the remaining $1.25 million for the project. It was noted that the high cost of the stretch of expansion is due to a bridge that will need to be constructed over Show Low Creek. “There is a steep chasm of about 100 to 150 feet that needs to be crossed,” stated Matteson. “Overall, the project will consist of 2.5 miles of road plus the bridge construction.” The board authorized the chairman to sign the agreement as presented by Matteson. It is anticipated that the concept and preliminary design phase will be completed by January 2010, with construction to begin after the City of Show Low, in consultation with the county, approves the final design.
